1 Introduction

The Industrial Process and Energy Systems Engineering (IPESE) laboratory at EPFL is directed by Prof. François Maréchal, which is a group taking the leading position in the field of process engineering, renewable energy system optimization and Energyscope modeling in Europe.

In this document, several research proposals are presented within the scope of “the Refinery of the Future”, which is a project collaborated between EPFL and TotalEnergies to help define the role of refinery in net zero transition.

These projects will be supervised by Prof. François Maréchal and/or the managers from TotalEnergies. Yi Zhao, currently a PhD student at IPESE, will serve as the assistant.
